"By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creating that he had done"- Genesis 2:2-3
The importance of rest, the spirituality of having a Sabbath, is something that many believers labor to embrace. Often the times in our lives that would be opportunities for recharging and rejuvenation are filled to overflowing with tasks. If we are not careful our "to do lists" can rob us of the energy, peace & perspective needed for us to be our most pleasing to God. In fact, it is our quiet time with God and devotional time int he Word of God that are suspended in order for our agendas to be accomplished. Truth is, our failure to rest drains us and makes us service to God (and others) substandard.
God did not require rest after creating all that exists. Rather, as God was in creation mode, God's decision to rest created the standard of Sabbath that we are supposed to model in our own lives. God's plan is that we intentionally take time to just be still. There is a spirituality connected to taking Sabbath we need to embrace as we mature in God. We do good not to forsake the rest that God desires for us to have in the name of the rat race. In addition to all that God provides for us, we also have an opportunity for God to bless us even more deeply by embracing every God given opportunity for rest.
This week, make time to steal away from all of the business & busyness of your life. Choose to set time apart from the grind and be purposeful about giving yourself time to rest. Know that your responsibilities will still be there and that you are not being irresponsible by making time for yourself. Perhaps the time you spend in Sabbath will allow you to hear what God has long been saying to you. God deserves our best and we are unable to give it to God if we do not give ourselves time to recenter, refocus & renew. This week, be a participant in the religion of rest. You will be surprised how much better you will feel and how much more you will be able to do.
Love you to life & praying for you.
